Musical Field of 68 set!

The field is set and now it's time to get your votes in. Many thanks to those of you who gave me suggestions for groups or artists that may have been overlooked. From now until March 16th, leave your votes in the comments below for the "First Four" at the top of the bracket. If you're unfamiliar with any of the selections, just click on their name below to be linked to a YouTube video I feel captures what they're all about. Every band or solo artist represented in this tournament deserves their nomination so I highly recommend listening to anyone you haven't heard before. Winners will go on to play in the field of 64 for which voting commences on March 17th.

Pssh. This is easy. I'm going to win my Musical March Madness office pool FOR SURE.

Them Crooked Vultures beats The Dead Weather in a walk, mostly because I'd rather use my forehead as a basketball than listen to the Dead Weather. Local Natives and Broken Bells goes to overtime, but Local Natives wins because James Mercer is too busy playing power forward for The Shins. James Vincent McMorrow takes a 60-point lead over Janelle Monae at halftime and takes a nap during the second half and still wins handily. Beady Eye beats Foster the People on the strength of the one Gallagher brother who still has the same Paul McCartney Tribute Haircut he had in 1994. Impressive.

The Dead Weather (just because I'd like to see Luke use his forehead as a basketball...)
Local Natives

And I will refrain from the other two as I am not familiar enough with their music.

I think I like the Dead Weather more than TCV yest TCV gets my vote, simply because I must push something Josh Homme Related to the next round. Though its a little sad that I will not be voting for them any more after the next round.

I have to vote for Broken Bells because they were one of the few bands I was actually excited to listen to last year. That doesn't happen much any more. They also got me back into the shins so that has to give them some bonus points right?

I can't really comment on either of the next matchups since I have never heard the artist playing.

C U next round

Not easy picks.

Them Crooked Vultures - not really a fair fight
(side note: when you give emo kids AK-47s it makes for some good viewin)

Broken Bells - really tough call, but James Mercer just knows how to take a proven sound and somehow make it new again

James Vincent McMorrow - Even JVM would get funky to Janelle Monae. I know I did. But there's something about his pure, unaffected style that leaves a lasting impression.

Foster the People - simply great tunes minus the deja vu (doesn't mean we can't still be friends, B.E.)

And to my fellow commenters - I know your internet reps are on the line, and all, but really, you're feigning musical ignorance in the age of YouTube (note the blogger's introductory paragraph)? Now go to your rooms and think about what you've done.

TCV feels like a cheap win because they're a supergroup composed entirely of A-list musicians. That said, I'm still voting for them in this round. As a side note, the dude from the Dead Weather video looks like a thinner, younger, emo-ier version of the guy who used to sing for Candlemass.

I'm going Local Natives. Don't ask me why, just a gut feeling.

I saw Janelle Monae when she opened for Prince, and I was generally disappointed. I expected the performance and the music to be more bombastic. Still, she has enough talent and credo to make it into the next round.

Everything about Beady Eye screams "I want to sing like John Lennon, but I can only write songs like Ringo Starr." I'm not a Foster the People fan, but they're original, so that's good enough to get them through.

Thanks to everyone who has voted so far. I'm going to do my best to make the voting process much easier for the next round (since there are certainly plenty of contests to vote on). Voting for the play in games ends at 8PM ET tonight.
